The steam edition is a butchered version missing out a lot of content, also it is incompatible with the HD mod which actually has more features than the steam "HD" version. GOG edition. I don't believe steam edition has expansions. Besides there are mods for gog edition for HD. Also DRM free!
Heroes 3 is a fantastic game, probably the game I have played more than any other in my life. Of course, the graphics are 2D, but even for an older game I still think the artwork looks amazing. The very basic concept is that you will always start with (usually) one Hero, who is your main character, although you can recruit others.
In addition to the 7 campaigns and 40 scenarios found in Heroes III, Shadow of Death adds seven more new campaigns and 38 new scenarios. This combines to create a mind-numbing amount of gaming
Heroes 3 is more complete in general. Heroes 4 was made when 3DO was having a lot of financial troubles so they had budget cuts and the game was released in a beta state. H4 has some interesting ideas like the magic & skill system, which I liked. But the problem is the heroes. Heroes in H4 is more like RPG.
Best version of Heroes 3 that supports all the best modern mods like Horn of Abyss:
Yet, for some reason, I still think Heroes 3 is a better game. I guess its Nostalgia. That, and Heroes 2 was so much better than Heroes 1, and Heroes 3 isn't as great over Heroes 2. It took me quite a while to "warm up" to Heroes 3, but Heroes 2 I warmed up immediately. Gunnar>all. Corribus. Round Table Knight.
